Re: USB3 ports on a Dell Laptop E6440 acting as USB2

$

I have the same problem with my Life-book notebook.

Some times the USB 3.0 ports will run in USB 2.1 Protocol and some times they will run in USB 3.0 protocol

I am trying very hard to figure out what is the reason behind this.  I have 3 USB 3.0 ports and 2 of them will run in 2.1 protocol and one will work in 3.0 protocol but the usb mass storage will always show up in the xHCI controller on on my USBVIEW.exe program.

The xHCI controller is the USB 3.0 controller.  You can see what devices run on the controller in USBVIEW.exe to make sure they are running on the correct USB 3.0 controller.

The problem is, they are running at USB 2.1 protocol and not USB 3.0 protocol.

If I change operating systems, the same problem happens.  This is very odd. I wish I knew what was causing my USB 3.0 port to run these USB 3.0 devices as USB 2.1 protocol and not USB 3.0 protocol.

By the way I am running INTEL 7 series C216 chip-set USB controllers and intel xHCI controllers.

I use chipgenius to see the USB protocol version when the USB 3.0 is running slow and I use USBVIEW to see what controller the USB mass storage is working with.

The USB 3.0 ports seem to change quite often what protocol they run my USB 3.0 USB drives at.  Sometimes they all run protocol 2.1 and its slow.  Some some of them run 2.1 and some run 3.0.   Sometime they all work.

I wish I could get them to run USB 3.0 protocol all the time.

The controller seems to be switching between 2.1 and 3.0 and I have no idea why or how to control it.

Re: How to connect Intel Edison OV7670

Generate a (min) of 8Mhz clock signal from either the Edison or an external clock generator - Adafruit manufacturer one.

Get 8 cables for the data lines of the camera and feed them into GPIO pins

Connect I2c to the camera control lines.

Monitor Hsync, Vsync and data lines - pull data from data lines accordingly.

DO lots of research (googling).

It is a non-trivial exercise - (I know because I have done a lot of research (MYSELF) in order to try to interface it to a Arduino Due)

IntelAnonymous,

For the first part, you can look here for starters: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/FAQ:How_do_I_set_or_change_the_root_password

For the last part, I believe that the "Yocto" approach is to create your own layer.  If you want to make major modifications to the default image that comes with the BSP (edison-image), then you will probably want to include a new image as part of that.  It's not difficult, and you can just copy edison-image for starters.

To create a layer, start here: http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/dev-manual/dev-manual.html#creating-a-general-layer-using-the-yocto-layer-script

Folder hierarchy seems to be significant in Yocto, so if you're trying to add to a recipe in your layer, you need to have a .bbappend file with the same name as the original .bb, and located in the same place.

I'll be more specific with an example:

To set a default hostname, you need to override the base-files recipe.  In the Yocto layers, this is found at: /path/to/edison-src/poky/meta/recipes-core/base-files/base-files_3.0.14.bb . There is function in that recipe that creates the /etc/hostname file in the target image, with a default value of openembedded.

So if you make a layer called "local", then you will need to add a single line of text containing hostname = "myEdison" to the file /path/to/meta-local/recipes-core/base-files/base-files_3.0.14.bbappend .

To include your layer, just add the path to it in /path/to/edison-src/build/conf/bblayers.conf .

Hopefully this has given you something to start with.  I think that the rest of what you're trying to do can be figured out from here, and with a few searches on these forums (e.g. for info on how SSH logins are initially restricted).

Thanks,

Perhaps my last question wasn't clear.  If I am building an image from the official ww05-15 Intel.com site linked by massca, why will I get something different than the complete image Intel distributes here Intel® Edison Products — Software Downloads?  And if it is different, what are the differences?  I am building a Linux machine and will do the build but I am not happy about having to branch from the official supported version.

@Intel, please fix this problem.

Install python module "MySQLdb" on Edison

What is the easiest way to install the python module "MySQLdb"? I have read that it can be installed from the OPKG repository, or it can be built into a custom image. In either case I do not know the necessary steps/dependencies needed to get it running on the Edison. I am new to using Yocto Linux and am rather lost. Any and all help is appreciated!

I've followed these directions, but I put the edison-image-edison.ext4 from ubilinux on the sdcard instead of the one from yocto. Now eMMC contains the latest yocto image, sdcard contains ubilinux. I'm getting stuck at "Starting kernel" and have the following output:

Starting kernel ...

[    1.667678] pmic_ccsm pmic_ccsm: Error reading battery profile from battid frmwrk

[    1.676164] pmic_ccsm pmic_ccsm: Battery Over heat exception

/bin/sh: 0: can't access tty; job control turned off

#

Any clues as to what might be going wrong?

Re: Ubilinux. Will it blend?

hi, the reason is that you trade one set of problems for another;  and, often the unit (the Edison) gets bricked in the process.

Yes, Ubilinux is more 'friendly,' has a better package manager, and has the entire debian support community... not to mention more binary packages available than yocto and opkg.

On the other hand, making xdk-daemon work on Ubilinux (with the rest of the Intel development kit) might be a fit.  I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying that Intel has optimized their development kit to work with yocto.

The main reason I'm opposed to Ubilinux is that 'most' people end of bricking their Edison when they try it.  I will tell you this, when it tells you to 'wait' two minutes at least in the middle of the process...  YOU BETTER DO WHAT YOU WERE TOLD>>>   I would go take a two - three minute walk at that point!

marcus

Re: Access Intel Edison from internet (no local connection)

$

Your question is not framed very well... so I am guessing what you mean by 'access' and what you mean by 'control option' and what you mean by 'Internet'.

Logon to your edison with a terminal (minicom on linux) (hyperterm on windows) and run:

configure_edison --wifi

This will allow you to configure your Edison to 'talk' on your home network via wifi.  This assumes you have a wifi access|point router.

It will give you a message for accessing your Edison from a web browser... keep in mind its just a simple interface that show your Edison is working, wifi is configured, and the simple web server is running.

Node.js is installed on your Edison. That means you can 'make' a web server with node.js (javascript) that is useful;  how complicated is up to you.  From the web page you 'make' YOU can provide controls for adjusting, configuring, or modifying the Edison on-the-fly.  Its up to you>

Cheers,

marcus

Re: need help with dz68bc processor

Its good that it worked, what you need to do is update gradually to 0042 meaning (from 0035 go to 0036, 0037, 0039 then finally 0042) but i would suggest you stick to BIOS 0039 coz the 0042 behaves erratic while using 3rd gen CPU that's what i found out while running tests on the DZ68BC and 3rd Gen CPU when i had them.

But considering your board is a revision 401 it might be stable even with the BIOS 0042 and 3rdgen CPU. The tests that i did back then were on board version 402 and 403 outcome was as i mentioned. There is a revision 401 of the board at the office with an i7-2600K and it did not have stability issues i haven't gotten around to test a 3rd gen CPU on it.

Cannot run WebServer example with IoT Dev Kit 1.0 SD image

$

Hello all,

I'm stuck at this step and looking for help.

I boot my Galileo Gen 2 board from the IoT Dev Kit 1.0 SD image (I downloaded from https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/downloads) and try to run the WebServer example (attached). The example works fine if I boot without the SD card. However, the sketch displays "Server at 255.255.255.255" and does not show the pin readings if I boot from the SD card. The WebClient example works, so I know the Ethernet card is up and running, but I don't know what I need to do to have the board listen to clients.

What do I need to do to work around this? I am looking to have the board host it's own page and post the temperature sensor readings, where I can access from any device connected to the internet. The reason I'm using this SD image is because I use GCC to compile my code for the sensor readings.

Any help with this is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, my processor is still dynamic ....... apparently not stuck anymore ....... but with the new EFUI systems not allowing you to do any changes (to see if speedstep is a problem ...... speedstep supposedly reduces speed when computer is idle ...... perhaps it is doing so at the wrong time ..... this error always occurs at startup when there is a large load on the processor), I am stuck. This limitation with the "BIOS" is totally unnecessary. This will be a consideration when I buy a new computer ....... or build one.

Intel Edison Arduino Ubilinux using serial interface

i had a read at Using Serialx on Edison

according to that pin 0 and pin 1 are TX and RX for 5v TTL levels, they are even labeled TX and RX on the Edison Arduino.

now i instaled python and pyserial

import serial

ser = serial.Serial('/dev/ttyMFD1', 19200, timeout=1)

ser.write('a')

but i don't get anything out on the TX pin, i even connected an oscilloscope to that pin and nothing

While running Windows Updates I noticed that there was a camera driver update included in the important updates. Updating the camera driver seems to have caused this error.  Go here:

Intel® RealSense™ SDK | Intel® Developer Zone

At the bottom of the page there is a link for the F200 firmware download which should take you here:

http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=218&CatName=Web+Cameras&subCatID=231&subCatName=MIDI+Keyb…

You only need to install the driver, not the firmware.  That should fix it.  It fixed the issue for me.

How to load a kernel module with a custom image

$

Hi,

using the Board Support Package (BSP) User Guide I built my custom image with a module kernel driver that I need. It was ok but my custom driver does't auto load at boot. If I load manually everything is fine.

To enable autoload I need manually add mydriver.conf file in /etc/modules-load.d/ directory. I would like to have this already done in my custom build. Any suggestion is welcome.

Thanks
