Re: Any plans on moving away from yocto? or cross supporting something else?

Hi CGKades

I can understand your frustration, and went through my own period of frustration with Galileo and Yocto, but over time have figured out most of its quarks and find it to be suitable for what I am trying to do.

I don't have any connection with Intel, except as a user of their products, but would guess that the small memory footprint and the way the BusyBox system makes it easy to build special purpose systems, like including Arduino emulation that nobody else has done, is why they picked Yocto. For my purposes, having a way for students to create projects in Python that are more advanced than they did with Arduino boards, and allowing me to make use of the large number of Arduino shields and sensors we have purchased, Yocto on the Galileo meets my needs. I looked at a number of different distributions on the Galileo (as well as some other boards running different OSs), tried to create different projects that students could do, and ran into problems, so went back to AlexT's version. I found ti to be quite speedy, adaptable and, when combined with the EmuTex wiring_x86 system, allows for use of almost all of the sensors and actuators we have or are purchasing. If all you want to do is add gphoto2 to the distribution, I  would suggest you look at AlextT.s version of Yocto. It has development tools that have allowed me to add just about anything I need. Alex has also been very supportive at including other packages and can probably help you port gphoto2. AlexT_Intel If it doesn't meet your needs, I can well understand, as one size doesn't fit all, which is why there are makers. :-)

Re: will the intel ssd migration software work with the 750 SSD AIC?

i saw that, but as it says "a fresh install is recommended", but i don't see that it is necessary.

couldn't i just migrate to the 750 and then install the drivers and change bios settings before taking out my old 730 ssd?

also it states while installing the operating system, the drive format is expected to be GPT, is there a benefit for the 750 SSD to GPT over MBR aside from the MBR 2 TB limitation?

thanks for your time!

Network configuration problems - Intel Galileo gen 1

Hi,

I'm using Intel Galileo gen 1 with SD-card Linux Image (Intel® Galileo Boards and Kits — Software Downloads -- Intel® Galileo Boards and Kits — SD Card Setup and Sketch Persistent) but I encountered a big trouble.

I started with the "/etc/network/interfaces" and set it with my network settings. Then, following the recommendations of a friend of mine that had already used this linux image in Galileo, I erased " /etc/rc5.d/S05connman" and created a link between "/etc/init.d/networking" and "/etc/rc5.d/S05networking", but after a reboot of the system I realised that the network configuration hadn't initialized with the system.

To fix that I used the command "ifup -a" which forces the network to initialize and incorporated it inside a script, making it run in the boot.

I don't know why is this happening, but what I did also affected "/etc/resolv.conf" file, which, after a reboot, is empty. I fixed this problem with the same script that loads up the network configurations.

So, the questions are: Can I keep this solution? And what I did wrong to cause all this trouble?

Besides the previous problem, I'm also having trouble to use OpenCV in this linux image. I've picked "SD-card Linux Image" because I'd been told that it had OpenCV, but I couldn't find how to do so. Can someone help me?

Regards,

Fabrício.

Re: Using onboard graphics together with a separate graphics card

I am also having a similar problem.

I had another monitor laying around so I decided to try Dual Monitors. I have a Onboard GPU, and a Nvidia GeForce 610 2GB MSI Low Profile Edition. For Each monitor it has a VGA or a DVI-D I believe. My 610 has a DVI-I Dual Link, and my Onboard has a VGA and some other one I have no clue about. When I plug in a Monitor to my 610, it works, but my Onboard one does not show on the monitor.

If I can do nothing, I will just get a VGA Y Splitter, but I am trying to see if I can get this to work before i spend money

External HDD firmware update made my system unbootable

$

After updating the firmware of my external HDD WD My Book, my toshiba laptop with a toshibainternalHDD, is no longer able to boot and I can'tenter the BIOS either. The internal HDD has three partitions, two with Windows 8 and one automatically created and reserved for the system. This message appears after the toshiba logo leaves the screen:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)

This product is covered by one or more of the following pattents

US5,307,459, US5,434,872, US5,732,094, US6,570,884

US6,115,776 and US6,327,625

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1,27 (10/31/11)

PXE-E61: Media text failure, check cable

PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device and press a key

If I may, I would like to know how to make my system boot from my internal HDD as before, and if(and why) a firmware update of an external hard drive produced this situation. It seems weird to me but I can't figure out another explanation. I tried to fix the problem with Intel ME FW Recovery Agent but it is not able to connect to the internet (though I have conexion).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • The system boots from a Live USB with Ubuntu, GRUB is loaded and it allows me to choose windows as the OS. I have two windows installed in two different partitions and I can work on both of them properly. Both the Ubuntu USB and the internal HDD are MBR formated, but Ubuntu has ext4 and Windows NTFS. In the internal HDD the system reserved partition is marked as active (0x80).
  • The pc does notboot from a USBWindows 8 Installer. This is the USB from which I installed the current SO. Using an hex editor, in both the Windows USB and internal HDD, I can see the same message written just before the code of the partition table:
Invalid partition table. Error loading operating system. Missing operating system.
  • BIOSsetup was to boot from a HDD first, USB was second, I enabled fast boot, intel ia was enabled (I don't remember the exact name of this option).

I must say that I strongly believe that before this happened I already have updated all the drivers and restarted the computer after that. But as I did that so many times I think I need to comment just in case I wasn't right, and this may be consequence of a driver udpate. I belive that the last driver I installed was the Intel Managment Engine. What I do know is that the BIOS version was not updated (it was the last version available) and that the Intel Chipset SW Utility was installed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical data:

PC: Toshiba laptop P850-31M

Operating system: two partitions with Windows 8.1 Pro. There is one automatically created partition for the system called "system reserved partition"

External updated Hard Drive: Western Digital My Book 1230 SN: WCC4E1476734

Firmware: updated from default to v1.065 using WDFirmwareUpdater (official)

Processor: 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0

Thanks for the detailed response. You are dead on correct about everything. I eventually determined the CPU temp was the driver using some temp monitoring software. Under load it was getting up into 80-90C, which seems abnormally high as the Tcase max for my CPU is 74C. (Perhaps the "green" settings you speak of?) However, when the fans ramped up, the temps dropped and stabilized around the 70s.

The heatsink was definitely seated correctly, and the thermal paste appeared even when I removed it to check. I'm using the cheap stock cooler though, not an aftermarket which I'm thinking is the real problem here. I noticed when installing it that it was about half the size and weight of some of the stock Intel coolers from the Core 2 Duo days.

Anyway, I'm taking your advice and leaving the SDR alone. Instead, I've ordered a well reviewed and significantly larger Zalman cooler to replace the stock piece of junk. I will post back if this solves the problem. With any luck, it will keep the CPU cool enough to prevent it from ramping the system fans up.

Hi zhe1274,

The problem is that your current OS was installed with the SATA driver as the boot driver.  If you migrate to the 750 the OS will no longer boot so you can't install the NVMe driver.  It's kind of a chicken and egg problem.

GPT is required for booting when the BIOS is set to UEFI so you will want to use GPT.

I'm a bit surprised by your comments about the sales listings.  Ads for the add-in card models should not mention 2.5".  Can you post some links that show the add-in card models as 2.5"?

Hello, I am changing out my motherboard and removing/reinstalling my I7 4770k processor. The processor came apart while doing so. The top metal part, which has the intel information about the processor which is the heat collector, I assume, separated from the bottom circuit board. Is this a problem? Looks like there is either a silver thermal paste or a glue of some sort that this was attached with. Is this normal or is it broken now? If it is normal, do I clean the thermal paste and reapply? What should I do?

Thank you,

Agreed

I am astounded at Intel ignoring this problem for over two years.

I have directly pm'd Intel suport reps and I get simply ignored.

This is clearly a design flaw that Intel refuses to deal with.  I would prefer them to respond saying that this problem cannot be fixed and they will honour a refund.

But to simply not acknowledge the issue makes it all the worse

Hello

Thanks for your answer.

I plugged-in the USB mouse and USB keyboard on USB2.0 port as below photo.

But, the power required description is still disappeared. I also plugged-in it on front USB2.0 port and result was the same.

Hi xbolshe,

Thank you for your response.

I tried to changed the platform type and the MRC parameter as you suggested.

Now, the board is not even bootable.

Re: Keyboard and mouse not working after USB3 driver install

I would try this from the Intel download site after installing the USB 3.0 drivers if you haven't already...

After installing this USB 3.0 driver, your USB keyboard and mouse may not work in Windows*. This is only a driver installation related problem and is currently under investigation. Follow these steps to solve this problem:

1. During boot, press F8 to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.

2. Select "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)".

The USB keyboard and mouse should now work in Windows.

Same here on my Haswell NUC. I bought a new Broadwell i3 hoping it would fix the issue, but that one causes the ARC channel on my TV to completely crash and my soundbar disconnects totally, and NOTHING plugged in has audio until I unplug the NUC's HDMI. How does a device so well designed as an HTPC not work with home theaters and TVs at all? Returned the new NUC and bought an Alienware Alpha and put 8.1/Media Center on it. Let's hope Nvidia knows how to make HDMI actually work properly. Intel doesn't.

Late to get back to you..Still waiting on a cable (DVI to mini HDMI) and some ram. Thanks for the suggestions. After some reading, I'm finding out that Win 7 is best installed using the installation source files from the disk to a ISO file then on to a USB stick to boot from if using the XP941 as the boot drive. Also picked up a Win 8.1 retail disk and might just install that instead of Win 7 as it's already running on my old desktop and reading that there is no TRIM support from Win 7.

Good idea on the drivers. Chipset first then the rest (ME, LAN , USB 3.0 )  Will post again as it happens.

Update 4.12. :  Decided to load Windows 8.1 on a Samsung 850 120GB SSD instead of XP941. Install using USB DVD and went smooth. Loaded chipset driver first then ME, LAN, and ALMOST the USB 3.0 drivers but noticed it's not supported by Win 8.1. After a couple of weeks, things are really nice and fast..but after checking this site frequently I noticed some are experiencing graphics driver issues with latest version. Went to check device mgr to see which version I have and noticed 10.18.10.3960 dated 9/29/2014 !  So far, had just one incident a week ago coming out of sleep where screen was just a mess..noticed that DVI cable was not securely plugged in so un-plugged and re installed it. Haven't had any issues since.
